Quickly assign and name materials / surfaces in Blender.

I recommended if you would like something a little more intuitive to install the native and inbuilt addon called Material Utilities 

Shortcut Key: Ctrl + Shift + p 

This can be changed in the keymap settings of the preferences menu ... it's called " Change Surface"
